Supplier Environmental Footprint Scorecard
We developed a Supplier Environmental Footprint Scorecard to make our upstream supply chain more sustainable. Launched in 2014, the scorecard targets our top 100 suppliers that collectively represent approximately two-thirds of our spending for goods and services. The scorecard enables us to profile top-supplier efforts to measure, set goals, and report on water and energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and waste sent to landfill. It also seeks data about our top suppliers’ suppliers (our second-tier suppliers) to expand our view of and ability to impact our upstream supply chain.
The scorecard is part of our ongoing work to help reduce the environmental impact of our top 100 suppliers, one of the company’s 2020 sustainability goals.
2017 Top 100 Supplier Environmental Footprint Scorecard Summary
The response rate for the 2017 Top 100 Supplier Environmental Footprint Scorecard was 96 percent, up 21 percentage points from 2014. Our 2014 Supplier Environmental Footprint Scorecard serves as a baseline with the goal of working with our strategic business partners to drive sustainability improvements across our supply chain in the years ahead. Much of the improvement came in the past year, when an educational webinar began to accompany our survey and we began instituting a supplier scoring system to more clearly communicate our expectations around what constitutes strong performance.

Analysis of Results
Because there are differences in suppliers falling into our Top 100 list each year, in 2017 we decided to analyze results for the subset of 86 suppliers that were among our Top 100 suppliers surveyed in both 2017 and 2016. This not only enabled us to compare performance among the same set of suppliers over time, but it also helped isolate the impact of instituting our new supplier scoring system and accompanying webinar introduced in 2016. Among these comparative suppliers between 2016 and 2017, the survey response rate in 2017 was 95 percent, up 13 percentage points from 2016. Not only did response rates improve, but performance among the 69 suppliers that responded in both years did as well, suggesting the webinar and scoring system have facilitated supplier engagement. We plan to continue exploring and implementing strategies to drive further improvements into the future.
