Stories from our people: Olivia Slay in the Burt’s Bees BU
Olivia Slay, a materials planner, has been getting to know all aspects of her department during her seven-plus years here at Clorox. “I started as a master data maintainer, I’ve held a buying role, I did production scheduling for different lines at the Burt’s Bees plant, and now it’s like all my past lives are in my current one,” she says.
“Before my interview, I had never been in a manufacturing plant,” Olivia admits. “Being in an unfamiliar environment was overwhelming, but I was comforted by the friendly people. They made time to introduce me to the machines and daily processes. Their empathy laid the foundation for this being a place where questions are welcome, and I try to replicate that for others.”
Beyond her day-to-day responsibilities, Olivia has found ways to connect with herself and her coworkers. “I think that Clorox really cares about us being our best selves at work — the resources they’ve provided make it so I can do that,” she says. “I’ve been a user of our employee assistance program for two years now; you get eight free sessions with mental health and wellness coaches. To me, providing that benefit goes beyond ‘you’re just an employee who works here.’ That’s more like ‘we care about you as a person,’ and I really appreciate that.”
Employee resource groups are another offering that helps promote teammate well-being. “The Women’s History Month event was a great opportunity for us to be vulnerable and talk about what it means to be a woman in the workspace,” Olivia says. “We’re different ages, work in different areas and have different backgrounds, but we discovered ways in which we weren’t so different at all.”
